5 Signs You Need New Gutters (Before the Damage Spreads)

Sagging, separations, rust streaks, soil erosion, basement seepage. If you see two of these, get a quote.

The short answer

Watch for five signs: sagging gutters, separating seams, rust streaks on siding, soil erosion below the eaves, and basement seepage. See two or more together and it is time for a quote.

1. Sagging or pulling away from the house

Gutters should sit tight and level against the fascia. When you see them dipping in the middle or leaning out from the roofline, the hangers have failed or the fascia behind them has gone soft. A sag holds standing water, which makes the sag worse — it does not fix itself.

2. Seams separating or leaking

On sectional gutters, the joints every ten feet are the weak point. When you see daylight at a seam, water dripping from a joint, or caulk peeling away, the system is failing where it was always going to fail. This is the most common reason Ohio homeowners switch to seamless.

3. Rust streaks and peeling paint on the siding

Stains running down the siding below the gutter line mean water is overflowing or leaking and running where it should not. Left alone, that moisture rots fascia and trim and works behind the siding.

4. Soil erosion or mulch washout

If the ground beneath your eaves is carved out, the mulch is washed away, or there are channels in the flower beds, your gutters are dumping water in the wrong place. That water is heading for the foundation.

5. Water in the basement during rain

The most expensive sign, and the one people miss. Gutters that overflow or drain at the foundation send water straight down the wall. If the basement gets damp during a hard rain, start with the gutters and downspouts before you assume the worst.

Repair or replace?

One isolated issue on otherwise sound gutters is a repair. Multiple signs together — especially seam failures along the run plus sagging — usually means replacement is the better spend. Not sure which? Call (440) 261-2833 and Mike will walk the roof and tell you straight — free, no pressure.
